Original Deviation

I've walked in the darkness since the day I was born. The rebellion screamed out to me like a drug and I got hooked from that first day of delinquency. It was a typical smoggy day in New York, the cars were jamming the streets, horns blaring as people tried to get from here to there. It was such a small task, steal the Porsche around the corner and go on a joy ride to Jersey. I had the valet suit on, looking easily like I worked there. I was now proud that I looked older then thirteen.

Stepping up to the curb, I looked around slowly, making sure no one would realize I didn't work at the hotel and report me to the police. The Porsche was pulling up, it was cherry red and purred like a kitten. Licking my lips, I bowed to the man who climbed out of the front seat. He handed me the keys and gave me a sixty dollar tip.

Grinning, I climbed into the front seat, started the engine and pulled away, waiting until I was around the corner before smashing down on the gas and letting the car carry me through traffic. I swerved in and out of traffic, moving into on-coming traffic, then easily cutting off taxi cabs at the last possible second.

I was in Jersey before I knew it, and pulling into the auto-body shop I worked for. Slipping out of the front seat, I watched the garage door close behind me. Jose whistled and began applauding me. I'd done my job, now I was to get paid. Five hundred bucks per car.

It's been nine years since that first joy ride to Jersey. I've been to jail several times and I've stopped working for Jose.

“Demetri!!! Would you come get Allison?” Smiling, I jogged upstairs and leaned in the doorway of the nursery. My wife, Zanda, had come into my life when I was twenty. She was my angel, the only light in my darkness. Walking into the nursery, I picked up Allison, our daughter, while Zanda had our son Aubrey in her arms. I didn't think I'd get out of the business of stealing cars for a living, but when I met Zanda, I felt as if I was drowning when I wasn't near her. We weren't married yet, but I had asked her to marry me when she was seven months pregnant with the twins.

Smiling, I sat beside Zanda and kissed her cheek lightly. These three were the light that broke through and ended the darkness inside me. I was happy, loved and a very proud father.
